Název akce | The secret of depression revealed: A modest proposal |
Bližší specifikace akce | Most clinicians intuitively know that depression usefully promotes learning in response to stressors. They know this from their own personal experience, and it is in their own medical literature. It appears, then, that most clinicians simultaneously hold two contradictory beliefs: (1) the belief that depression is caused by a malfunction in the brain; (2) the belief that depression is a normal emotional response to stressors. The first belief is represented by the DSM’s view of depressive symptoms as the manifestation of a brain disorder if they last for at least two weeks and are severe enough to cause impairment in an important domain of functioning. The second belief is represented by the view that DSM criteria are overinclusive, which was prominent in the debate over the elimination of the bereavement exclusion. Only one of these beliefs is true. Based on their own personal experience, clinicians have held—and continue to hold—the key to an accurate understanding of the true nature of depression. |
