Sleep and wakefulness disorders

The research group mainly focuses on the following two areas:

Parasomnias and nocturnal seizure states

The subject of interest is the entire clinical spectrum of parasomnias. The research group deals with the pathophysiological mechanisms of NREM parasomnias and the factors involved in their persistence into adulthood. It researches the electrophysiological correlates of parasomnias both within the differential diagnosis of nocturnal seizure states, but also from the point of view of possible therapeutic interventions. Another area of interest of this group is research aimed at monitoring the relationship between behavior disorder linked to REM sleep and neurodegenerative disorders of the CNS.

Hypersomnia

The research group also deals with the differential diagnosis of conditions of excessive daytime sleepiness, especially central hypersomnias. It is dedicated to researching the clinical, immunological and genetic factors involved in their development. At the same time, it is also involved in research into psychopathological mechanisms that can influence increased daytime sleepiness.

Main goals

The basis of clinical research is the diagnosis and treatment of sleep and wakefulness disorders. The actual work with patients creates space for clinically relevant hypotheses and serves as a platform for testing new diagnostic and treatment procedures.

At the same time, an important goal is to understand the pathophysiology of sleep and wakefulness disorders, which makes it possible to propose innovations in diagnostic and treatment procedures based on the knowledge gained.

Cooperation

The research group cooperates with domestic (1st Medical Faculty of Charles University and General Faculty hospital) and foreign workplaces (University of Edinburgh, UK; McGill University, Montreal, Canada; Scientific Institute San Raffaele, Milan, Italy; Charité – Universitätsmedizin, Berlin, Germany) and is a member prestigious European sleep research groups (European Narcolepsy Network; European Sleep Apnea Database; International RBD Study Group; Ean Neuro-covid ReGistrY).
