Annotation

Mate choice is one of the key decisions in a person’s life. It has an impact not only on one’s satisfaction, health, and wellbeing but also on relationship quality with one’s parents, which is also why parents tend to interfere in their offspring’s mate choice. This project’s aim is to investigate how parents influence their offspring’s mate choice and established relationship functioning, and how parental activities affect their offspring’s relationship satisfaction and wellbeing. In a representative study, we will test whether parental activities vary depending on sociodemographic characteristics such as income and education. In a prospective study, we will examine discrepancies between mate preferences (Phase 1), and actual partner characteristics (Phase 2) reported by parents and their offspring. Importantly, we will also detect parental tactics of individuals who remain single. In a cross-cultural study, we will investigate cultural variation in parental influence on mate choice in a country with a low (Czech Republic) and high level of collectivism (Brazil).
