The Cellular and Molecular Imaging Laboratory is a high-profile research facility equipped with two powerful and versatile optical imaging systems for cellular and molecular interrogation of biological samples. 

Leica TCS SP8 X Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope

This is a top of the range confocal microscope equipped with a white tuning laser, affording selection of any desired excitation wavelength or a combination of wavelengths (up to eight) for simultaneous scanning within the visible spectrum (470-670 nm). It is equipped with a white laser, as well as single and multichannel lasers from near the UV area (405 nm) over the entire visible area (Ar laser, DPSS laser, HeNe laser). The system allows the combination of any excitation lines and corresponding detection settings thanks to the AWS (Acousto-Optical Beam Splitter). The sensor part of the system includes spectrally configurable confocal detectors - photomultiplier (PMT) and Hybrid Detectors (GaAsP based HyD). The microscope can be used for a wide variety of applications, from fixed specimens to living cells and cell cultures, and has access to the temperature control and CO2 concentration chamber. The latter makes the imaging system suitable for calcium imaging in neurones, as well as for applications such as FRAP, FRET, and FLIM in living cells.

Zeiss AxioImager Z1 Fluorescence Microscope

For classic light field shooting and epifluorescence imaging, the Zeiss AxioImager Z1 motorised microscope with a full set of dry and immersive lenses is available. The microscope is equipped with a Zeiss digital camera for image acquisition. Both the microscope and the camera are controlled by AxioVision for single and multi-channel fluorescence imaging over time and 3D volumetric data acquisition.

Assistance and Services

Microscopes can be accessed independently and are used under the supervision of trained instructors from the RP1 of NUDZ. For unskilled users, assistance is provided with sample optimisation and image acquisition. RP1 also provides services to outside users in data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation.
